Garden favorites for Summer!

If you’ve stopped into one of our stores this month, you’ve probably noticed bountiful bunches of summer flowers from Bachman’s lining the benches and tables. Summer brings exciting seasonal flowers that we just can’t get enough of. This month find fun flowers like mini calla lilies, veronica and mini gerbera daisies, which are perfect for popping into a bud vase at home or bringing to a friend or neighbor.

Summer also brings locally grown flowers to stores. Though our growing season is short, the flower farmers make the most of it producing stunning flowers all season long. This month, check out fragrant bunches of peonies and other garden favorites, grown just outside the Twin Cities. For an easy and classic arrangement, you can assemble at home, try a bunch of peonies mixed with a bunch of Israeli ruscus or roses. Arrange together in a vase or split up your blooms between several smaller vases for a flower fix in every room.

With summer flowers comes summer heat! Here are a few steps to take to keep your flowers perky at home:

  • Keep them cool. Your fresh flowers will feel their best if kept in a cool place that’s between 65 and 72 degrees. Make sure they stay out of direct sunlight and away from vents or drafty areas.
  • Quench their thirst. Add fresh water to their vase each day, but make sure it’s nice and cool, as warm water makes flowers open more quickly. If the water starts getting cloudy, pour it out and replace it with fresh water.
  • Snip their stems. When you’re giving your flowers fresh water, it’s a great idea to give them a fresh cut as well. Snip each stem at a 45-degree angle about 1 to 2 inches up from the bottom. Cutting at an angle prevents the stems from sitting flush with the bottom of the vase and collecting unwanted bacteria. It also gives the stems more surface area to take in water.
  • Give them food. Give your flowers added nutrients by sprinkling in Bachman’s flower food whenever you replace the water. Flower food is a special blend of additives that nourishes your arrangement and discourages bacteria from growing in the water.

Wishing you a happy and flower-filled summer!
