An apple a day…

Right now is the best time to eat apples – and you’re sure to find the season’s best every day in our produce department.

Apple season began back at the end of summer and will last until the early winter months. These popular, crunchy, juicy fruits are members of the rose family, which also includes apricots, plums, cherries, peaches, pears, raspberries and almonds. Originally grown in eastern Europe and southwestern Asia, now you can find over 7,000 varieties of apples grown all over the world. There are over 20 varieties grown right here in Minnesota, including Cortland, Fireside, Haralson, Honeycrisp, McIntosh and SweeTango.

Apples are filled with nutrients, particularly in the skin, that can help regulate blood sugar, lower blood fats and help with cardiovascular and digestive health. The antioxidants in apples have also been shown to lower the risk of asthma and lung cancer.

If that isn’t enough reason to munch on an apple, check this out: Studies show that when healthy adults eat a medium-sized apple around 15 minutes before a meal, their caloric intake at that meal decreases by an average of 15%.

Wondering how to pick the perfect apple? Start with our apple guide. When you’re shopping for apples, look for firm fruits with rich coloring. Red and Golden Delicious are among the sweetest apples; Braeburn and Fuji apples are slightly tart; Haralson and Granny Smith apples are among the most tart, but retain their texture best during baking.
