MINNEAPOLIS – In an effort to increase reusable bag usage at its stores, Lunds & Byerlys have launched “Reuse and Reward.”

Through this new program, which began on Feb. 19, 2009, Lunds & Byerlys are donating 5 cents to Second Harvest Heartland for every reusable bag used to bag a customer’s groceries at all 21 Lunds & Byerlys.

Twin Cities-based Second Harvest Heartland is the Upper Midwest’s largest hunger relief organization. With their buying power, every 5-cent donation is turned into 45 cents worth of grocery products for those in need.

“Reuse and Reward is a win-win for our customers and our company,” said Bea James, senior manager of organic and natural at Lunds & Byerlys. “Reusable bags help lessen our customers’ impact – and our company’s impact – on the environment by reducing the amount of paper and plastic bags entering the waste stream. Now, through our Reuse and Reward program, those less fortunate are also benefiting from customers using reusable bags at our stores.”

In conjunction with the launch of this new program, Lunds & Byerlys will make a $10,000 donation to Second Harvest Heartland at the Crispin Iceball, an outdoor baseball game which will take place at Midway Stadium in St. Paul on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009.
