Elegant Easter Lilies
With an early spring here in Minnesota, now is a great time to refresh and renew for the season. There’s nothing that says new beginnings better than the pure white Easter lily, and this spring is all about starting a new season with beautiful flowers. Here at Bachman’s, we have a long and historical relationship with the elegant Easter lilies. After all this time growing the spring flower on our farm in Lakeville, we know the plant quite well.
With over 8,000 Easter lilies grown each year, a large portion of our greenhouse space is dedicated to the plant. Growing the Easter lily is a mix of both art and science, as this flower is a finicky crop and has a short bloom time. Easter lilies must be carefully coaxed to bloom the week before Easter.
We love the Easter lily for its incredible fragrance, large, pure white flowers, and glossy, dark green foliage. Here are a few tips from our experts to care for your Easter lily:
- Place in a spot with bright, morning light. Avoid areas with afternoon light.
- Keep soil evenly moist, but not wet.
- During bloom time, check your plant’s hydration daily, and never let it sit in stagnant water.
- Protect the plant from drafts and heat sources.
- Remove the anthers to avoid staining from pollen.
- Keep away from cats as lilies are toxic to cats. If your cat eats any part of a lily, call the Pet Poison Helpline at (800) 213-6680, your local emergency clinic, or your veterinarian immediately.
