Ingredients

  • 1 loaf Brioche or Challah bread
  • 4-6 Tbsps butter

Custard

  • 5 eggs
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • zest of two oranges
  • zest of one lemon
  • 1/2 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt

Filling

  • 2 blocks cream cheese softened
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • zest of one orange
  • zest of one lemon
  • 1/2 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, maple syrup, orange zest, lemon zest, ground cardamom, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt.

  2. In a separate bowl, stir together the cream cheese, maple syrup, orange zest, lemon zest, ground cardamom, and cinnamon. Add the filling to a piping bag and cut off the tip.

  3. Slice the bread into approximately ¾ inch pieces. Cut a slit about ¾ way through the bread slices and fill the inside using the piping bag.

  4. Melt the butter (about 2 Tablespoons per batch) and cook the french toast for about 4-5 minutes per side on medium heat until golden brown.

  5. Garnish with your favorite toppings! Ideas include berries, maple syrup, powdered sugar or honey.
