Midsummer Blooms from Bachman’s

By midsummer in Minnesota, gardens are in full bloom, lakes are packed with outdoor enthusiasts, and summer picnics and grill-outs are in full swing. For our friends at Bachman’s, July means locally grown flowers, including bright and cheerful sunflowers. These summer blooms add a pop of color to backyard picnics and bring the beauty of summer inside when added to the kitchen counter or dining table.

Sunflowers, the unofficial flower of summer, are universally loved for their simple homespun beauty. Their large size make a big impact and make them easy to arrange at home. Just pop a bouquet of locally grown sunflowers into a large mason jar or pitcher for an easy arrangement that you can enjoy or gift to a friend. Sunflowers also look great when accompanied by other summer blooms, especially those in shades of purple or blue, like lavender-hued veronica or blue delphinium, which are complementary to yellow. Try cutting flowers from your own garden to incorporate into your arrangement, or pick up a few bunches of foliage and accents at Lunds & Byerlys.

Be sure to take proper care of your Bachman’s blooms to ensure longevity. As soon as you get home, give your flowers a fresh cut with sharp garden shears, and plunge them into cool water with a sprinkle of Bachman’s flower food.  Refresh the water every day, recutting the stems while you’re at it. Keep your flowers away from hot sun or drafts to ensure a long vase life.

Here’s to sunny summer days!
